We started this project off with a closet, who am I kidding, it was closets plural and it was AWESOME, purge and it was so rewarding, not just for me physically, but to watch my client grow in their decision-making skills. While the idea of purging can be debilitating to some, it can also be extremely cathartic for others, but what's the difference between those people? To me, it's the journey and where they are on it. I am a firm believer that you can do hard things, and my client absolutely did, but maybe a month earlier they couldn't have, heck 15 minutes into my being there they weren't sure they were ready to take on the upstairs of their home and they completely knocked it out of the park!! Being on the journey and watching someone stand firm in what they want is a beautiful thing but it's also important that I don't put too much of my opinion in the mix and it's also super important to honor any of their requests, to a certain degree.
One of my favorite decisions of this project was the one where we decided to honor who she was and what that looks like. As we were making our way through the items we started a pile of things we just knew we couldn't donate but we weren't sure where they should physically go. I remember asking her " Who are you? Years from now, what do you want your family to remember about you? What do you want to share with your daughter?" That is when we decided to put those items into a memory box. For now, it holds old sorority mementos, grandma's sweatshirts, t-shirts from her brother's company, and other meaningful items that deserve to be kept and treasured but don't necessarily have a place in her closet. I am really proud of that decision and the legacy it will carry on.
My client did so many hard things on this two-day project. While we are not quite finished we purged and purged, and purged some more, we eliminated the use of the upstairs closet meaning she can now have all of her items in her main closet, we established the use of a shoe/utility closet, and we discovered she can do anything she puts her mind to, she doesn't put off hard choices anymore, and she can change anything she wants to about herself, whenever she wants! I also got to snuggle her perfect baby, get some love from her pups, laughed A LOT, and just watched in awe as she did the damn thing. Queens are everywhere!
result of the big purge - there are 70 dresses in here and lots more great items that will be sold at a garage sale!
